Hello! I would like to say thank you for stopping by my crochet corner and wanting to learn more about me! Welcome to Hello Yellow Yarn! I’m MJ (short for Mary Jo). I love to crochet and make cute stuff! I am a self-taught crocheter – I learned to crochet from the internet and reading crochet books.

I live in Sydney, Australia with my loving and very supportive family – my husband, my 14-year-old daughter, my 10-year-old son and our little cavoodle.

Having blogged in the past about food and dining in Sydney, I realised I wanted a new hobby. The internet is full of wonder, a place of  inspiration and a haven for tutorials. After watching how to make an arm knitted infinity scarf from a tutorial online, I was intrigued and suddenly felt the need to purchase a basket full of yarn and make that scarf. So I did. I made four more and came to a realisation that I needed to learn how to knit.

There are just so many tutorials online from thousands upon thousands of talented people. I eventually learned the basics of knitting and admired this newfound skill I gained. The first knitted item I made was a rainbow scarf with pink pom poms for my daughter.

I couldn’t just stop at knitting. I learned to crochet. After knitting a beanie for my daughter, I realised it was missing something.  It was too plain.  My daughter saw a picture of a crocheted flower on a beanie and wanted hers to look like that. Problem was, I had no idea how to crochet. Well I did. Sort of.  I knew how to chain but that was it. So once again I explored the internet for tutorials and learned to crochet a rose.

After that, I crocheted a scarf then I learned the wonderful art of amigurumi. Amigurumi is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting yarn creatures. At first I started to make small play food toys for my kids. They loved it so much, I couldn’t stop crocheting toys. There was a sudden burst of energy for crocheting, I was, excuse the pun, hooked on crochet! I never knew I had the talent for crochet and I was suddenly in love with my new hobby.

From small little play food to amigurumi animals and now designing patterns that I get to share with you all. It’s amazing this skill that I’ve learned, but I know there’s still so much more to explore!

After having worked in the finance and legal industry for 15 years, I am now a proud full-time mum and working on something I am so passionate about.  I get to create cute little things everyday! I share my patterns here on my website, Etsy, Amigurumi.com and LoveCrafts.  It makes me very happy to see that my little creations make other people happy!

Besides crocheting, I also love playing video games, one that is very immersive with a great story.
