Hello everyone! I have a really beautiful and easy cap pattern for you all.  Even if you are new to crochet, this cap is relatively easy to make. It uses several stitch techniques but the pattern is very straight forward. You will need to know how to crochet the front post and back post double crochet – if you are not familiar with these stitches, I highly recommend watching tutorials on YouTube first.

While I know it’s summer in other parts of the world, it is now well and truly winter here in the land Down Under and I’ve been crocheting beanies for my kids like a mad woman! I do love the cold weather though.

I am extremely pleased with how this cap turned out and I love the texture.  This cap looks great on both boys and girls – I made one for my little boy without the buttons and I made one for myself in olive green.

You will need:

5mm crochet hook
1 x 8 ply acrylic yarn, colour of your choice (I used 1 100g, 271m ball of yarn and I had plenty leftover)
Scissors
Yarn needle
2 x round buttons

Abbreviations (US crochet terminology)

Ch – chain
Sc – single crochet
Hdc – half double crochet
Dc – double crochet
Fpdc – front post double crochet
Bpdc – back post double crochet
Sts – stitches
Rep – repeat

***IMPORTANT PATTERN NOTES***

• Always begin each round in the same stitch as your chain.
• Always end your rounds by joining to the first Dc/hdc/sc stitch, not the chain.
• The chains are never counted as a stitch.
• The textures in this beanie are worked like a weave – it’s worked in alternate front post and back post stitch; e.g. If the first stitch of your round is a fpdc then the last stitch of the round should be a bpdc.
• You will work the alternate stitch over the stitch from the previous round; e.g. If the stitch from the previous round is a fpdc, then you will work a bpdc over that stitch.
• Crochet with a relaxed tension.

Child size (3 – 5 years)

Rnd 1: Work 10 dc in magic ring. Join, ch 2 (10 sts)
Rnd 2: 2 Dc in each st around. Join, ch 2 (20 sts)
Rnd 3: Dc 1, 2 Dc in next st; rep around. Join, ch 2 (30 sts)
Rnd 4: Dc 2, 2 Dc in next st; rep around. Join, ch 2 (40 sts)
Rnd 5: Dc 3, 2 Dc in next st; rep around. Join, ch 2 (50 sts)
Rnd 6: Dc 4, 2 Dc in next st; rep around. Join, ch 2 (60 sts)
Rnd 7: Fpdc 1, Bpdc 1; rep around. Join, ch 2 (60 sts)
Rnd 8: Bpdc 1, Fpdc 1; rep around. Join, ch 2 (60 sts)

Visor (Child)

Start by attaching yarn on the 11^th st from fasten off point.
Row 1: Ch 1. 1 sc in same st, then 1 sc in next 39 sts. Ch 1, turn. (40 sts)
Rows 2 – 9: 1 sc in next 40 sts. Ch 1, turn. (40 sts)
Row 10: 1 sc in next 40 sts. Fasten off. Weave in and hide all yarn tails. (40 sts)

Visor (Teen/Adult)

Start by attaching yarn on the 11^th st from fasten off point.
Row 1: Ch 1. 1 sc in same st, then 1 sc in next 45 sts. Ch 1, turn. (46 sts)
Rows 2 – 9: 1 sc in next 46 sts. Ch 1, turn. (46 sts)
Row 10: 1 sc in next 46 sts. Fasten off. Weave in and hide all yarn tails. (46 sts)

Attaching buttons

Fold one corner of the visor upwards on an angle.

Attach one button by sewing it onto the corner of the visor and onto the cap.

Repeat for the other end of the visor.

Alternatively, you can also just stitch down the corners of the visor to the cap with a contrasting yarn colour – this is what I did for my son’s cap.
