One of the first things I learned to crochet even before amigurumi are beanies. In fact, it’s one of the first things I learned to knit then I transitioned to crocheting because I found crochet stitches looked more intricate and beautiful.
The half double crochet ribbing is my favourite of all ribbing style stitches. It looks neat and has a lot of versatility. You can use the stitch on bags, blankets, sweaters, cardigans and of course beanies. It gives a beanie a very nice classic look and it’s so easy to do!
This beanie is wonderful project for newbies or even seasoned crocheters because of its simplicity. And it doesn’t take long to make. It also makes a thoughtful gift for family and friends.

CROCHET RIBBED BEANIE
You will need:
- 5mm crochet hook
- 10 ply (Aran/Worsted) yarn in your choice of colour (I used one skein of Paintbox Yarns in Simply Aran, 184 m/201 yd)
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Tape measure
Skill: Beginner
Pattern Notes:
- US Crochet Terminology.
- You will be crocheting in rows.
- The starting chain determines the height of the beanie.
- The finished beanie from this pattern is a MEDIUM size, suitable for most adults and teenagers.
- The height of the beanie with the band/brim folded up is approximately 21 cm/8.5 in.
- You will need to adjust the starting chain and number of rows if you want to make a different size beanie. See below for size alterations.
Abbreviations (US Crochet Terminology)
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
st / sts – stitches
BLO – back loops only
BEANIE (MEDIUM size, approximate head measurement 51-53 cm/20-21 in)
Start with a tail of about 20 cm/8 in. Ch 48.
Row 1: Skip 1st ch, hdc 41, sc 6. Ch 1, turn (47 sts)
Row 2: BLO sc 6, BLO hdc 41. Ch 1, turn (47 sts)
Row 3: BLO hdc 41, BLO sc 6. Ch 1, turn (47 sts)
Row 4: Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have 46 rows. The last row should be worked the same as Row 2. Do not fasten off yet after the last row.
FINISHING
Fold the beanie in half with the top of the beanie to your left side and the starting tail closest to you and on the left side also. The beanie should be inside out at this stage. Join the edges (first and last row) of the beanie with a slip stitch to the back loops only. Fasten off and leave a yarn tail of about 30 cm/12 in length. Weave the yarn tail through the top most stitches and pull it tight to close. Secure the two tails together with a knot. Weave in and hide the yarn tails. Turn the beanie the right side out and fold up the band/brim.
This beanie has a good stretch and will fit most adults and teenagers. If you would like to make the beanie smaller or larger, see alterations below for different sizes. Please keep in mind that you will need more than 184 m/201 yd of worsted/aran/10ply yarn if you want to make a larger beanie.
