What’s that? Ube? Yes, the purple craze that’s slightly taking over matcha in the culinary world. Ube – pronounced “oo-beh”, is a purple yam originating from the Philippines, my birth country. It’s a root vegetable but unlike taro which is also a root vegetable, ube is in fact sweeter and richer in flavour. Some say with a nutty and vanilla taste. Ube will always take me back home. It’s used in many dessert forms most commonly in cakes and what we call Ube halaya, which is like a thick jam. You can use it like a spread or a topping.
Anyway, now I’m craving for some Ube macapuno cake. Look that up. It’s also very delicious!
Don’t have ube? No problem. I bet you have purple yarn though, right? Let’s make this cute Ube Milkshake!

FINISHING AND ASSEMBLY
1. Place the cream on top of the milkshake and sew the stitches between rounds 1 and 2 of the cream to the top of the milkshake. Weave in and secure the yarn tail through the piece several times.
2. Sew the cherry in the centre, on top of the cream. Weave the tail through the milkshake several times and draw out the tail on top of the cherry. Make a knot on the yarn tail about 4cm/1.5inch from the top of the cherry and the tail close to the top of the knot.
3. Sew the straw on top of the milkshake, over rounds 24 and 25.
4. Using purple yarn, embroider the nose by sewing several stitches, one stitch wide, one round below the eyes in the centre.
5. Using pink yarn, embroider a blush by sewing 2 horizontal stitches, 2 stitches wide, below each eye.

Well done! Your milkshake is finished! Make it a desk buddy or add a keychain to make it a bag charm.
