When I first learned how to crochet amigurumi, I had to learn and understand the magic ring, or magic circle as it’s also known. After all, it is the starting point and essential part of amigurumi and projects that require crocheting in the rounds.
There is the Ch 2, single crochet x in the 2nd chain from hook method, but that leaves a hole in the centre. Then there’s the magic ring method.
There are so many variations of making a magic ring, it took me a while to get used to it.
After much practice and working out different ways to do it and what felt comfortable to me, I eventually found my own way of making a magic ring.
I’ve made a quick video tutorial below that shows how I do a magic ring and how to work single crochets into the ring.
Hopefully this tutorial has helped you in your next amigurumi project.
Happy crocheting!

Great tutorial MJ! I’ve made starting rings in a very different way where there was no tail to pull on / not adjustable. Will have to try it your way!
Thank you Jam! Do try it 🙂 It’s a nice technique.
I will have to now. Thanks! 🙂
MJ, Thank you so much for the magic ring video. I tried several other methods without success and then came upon your video. Not only did it work for me, but I also thought it was much simpler. Thank you for sharing your talent!
Are you able to do hdc in this ring? I’m very new to the magic ring, so sorry if this is a dumb question.
