Hi everyone! We are in our last month of winter here and it is still very cold, especially in the mornings. Not only was it cold today, it was very windy. I quite love winter but I’m actually looking forward to spring these days, just for a small hint of warmth. Although spring here usually means magpie swooping season and I’m not particularly looking forward to that!
I’m so very happy to introduce you to two new members of the Hello Yellow Yarn design collection – Mama Jill and Little Joey! Mama Jill loves to hop along the forest, collecting beautiful flowers for her hat and Little Joey, well, he just wants to relax in Mama’s pouch! Pattern is now available at Etsy, Craftsy, Amigurumipatterns.net and LoveCrochet.
I’ve been wanting to do another Australian animal since my koala and I’m so thrilled to finally finish my kangaroo design! Originally, I had planned to do only one kangaroo but it just didn’t quite feel complete without its Joey. I also added golden wattles (Australia’s national flower) to Mama Jill’s hat.
Have you seen a kangaroo before on your travels? Or would like to see one? About 8 years ago, my husband and I and our then 2-year-old daughter visited a wildlife park. We got to see plenty of eastern grey and red kangaroos and wallabies. I can’t remember if we got to pat a kangaroo but my daughter definitely got to pet a wallaby. It was a very exciting experience for her, she wasn’t even scared one bit!
The pattern is marked easy and suitable for advanced beginners – no complex stitches but there is a number of sewing required. You will need to know how to make a magic ring/circle, crochet in spirals, chain, crochet in foundation chain, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, crochet in front loops, single crochet increase and decrease. You’ll also need to know basic sewing technique, in this case whipstitching to sew all the parts together.
I used a 3mm hook and 8 ply acrylic yarn for Little Joey and he measures 13cm (5 inches) tall. 3.5mm hook and 8ply acrylic yarn for Mama Jill and she measures 26cm (10 inches) tall.
You will need:
- 3mm and 3.5mm crochet hooks
- 8 ply Acrylic yarn in Light Brown at least 100g (270m/295yds)
